Michael Saunders Reportedly Signs With The Phillies

With the Jays’ focus set on Jose Bautista, Michael Saunders has found work south of the border.

The Blue Jays may be on the verge of improving their outfield with the addition of Jose Bautista. Meanwhile, Michael Saunders appears to no longer be an option. According to Jon Heyman, Saunders has signed a 1-year/$9M contract with the Phillies, with a team option for a second year.

Saunders had a decent 2016 campaign with the Blue Jays. A tremendous first half earned him a spot in the All-Star Game, as a winner of the fan ballot. However, Saunders’ second half showed a considerable decline. In total, he finished the year with a line of .253/.338/.478, with 24 home runs (just shy of that elusive 25). Saunders’ defence and the health of his knee will raise some questions, but a potential two-year deal seems like a fair contract for him.

Saunders was vocal in expressing his desire to return to the Blue Jays, so it will be tough to see the Victoria native play elsewhere. Hopefully he can put up a couple of nice seasons in Philadelphia.
