The MLB arbitration process is now underway. The Blue Jays have fewer players eligible for the process this year than they did last year. You can take another name off of the list, as Darwin Barney has agreed on a new deal with the team. Jon Heyman has the story.

This will be a nice pay raise for Barney in 2017, as the defensive specialist earned $1.05M in 2016. Per Ben Nicholson-Smith, MLB Trade Rumours projected Barney to earn $1.6M this year. The fact that he earned $1.2M more than that projection speaks to how highly the new front office must value defence. Barney had an above-average 2016 season by his standards, as he posted a line of .269/.322/.373 in 104 games. It is no secret that his value comes predominantly from his Gold Glove-calibre defence.
It is possible that Barney will continue to play a prominent role on the team, as both Devon Travis and Troy Tulowitzki have a history of injuries. The agreed salary seems to be fair compensation for someone who performs his role.
