As expected, Jose Bautista has returned to the Blue Jays’ lineup ahead of tonight’s game against the Angels. Ryan Goins will be sent to Buffalo to make room on the 25-man roster.
Bautista has had a disappointing season, especially considering his pending free agency. To date, he has a line of .222/.349/.444, good for a wRC+ of 114 (and a 0.7 fWAR). Bautista’s most recent injury marked his second trip to the disabled list this season. He had a noticeable slump in between DL stints.
Both Bautista and the Blue Jays will look for a much higher level of production through September. Fortunately, his walk rate has stayed up all season. That suggests that he is best suited for the leadoff spot in the lineup. As for Bautista’s fielding, John Gibbons has said that he is likely to receive more time at DH for the rest of the season. Expect Melvin Upton Jr. to stay in left field, and Michael Saunders in right.
While Goins is gone for now, he won’t be in Buffalo for long. He will be eligible to return to the Blue Jays on the expanded 40-man roster come September 5th.
